During this hands-on workshop offered by Garden Masterclass, brilliant plantswoman and expert pruner Caroline Jackson will introduce ways of looking at what pruning can offer to existing plants in a garden and how to harness pruning methods when creating planting plans. There will be a combination of indoor sessions looking at pruning theory and outdoor sessions in Denmans Garden looking at plants and practical pruning. Bring your secateurs!

Over the past 25 years, Caroline (BSc (Hons) Landscape Management, HND Landscape and Amenity Horticulture) has taught horticultural programmes at Hadlow College and RHS Wisley, including Garden Management and Gardening Techniques, Historic Landscapes, Plant Science and Taxonomy and Crop Production. Caroline was also a Gardener at Windsor Great Park, Savill Gardens and Frogmore Gardens in Windsor.  Among the topics she will cover are during the day-long class:

  • Assessing the possibilities of existing, mature plants, whether to reshape or rejuvenate the plant.
  • Regular pruning techniques and how they relate to spacing / design of gardens, when to specify the type of pruning in a planting plan.
  • Enough plant science to think about the way plants respond to different pruning regimes.
  • Pruning rules of thumb, things that are generally true and usually guide us well when making pruning decisions.
